Common Suspension Issues

When you take your car out on the road for the first time, you should be able to enjoy a very smooth journey from beginning to end; the last thing that you want is for the car to start jittering and becoming simply unusable when on the road. There are a few problems that can happen with car suspension, and we are here to tell you the most common ones that you should definitely look out for if your car is having problems.

The Issues

Bumpy Journey

Your car should ideally feel like a protective barrier between yourself and the road; with metal coil springs that absorb shock and energy without you feeling the brunt of it, things can sometimes go wrong. If your car journey feels bumpier than normal and you notice that you are bouncing around more than normal, your suspension could be malfunctioning and need to be replaced.

Liquid Suddenly Appearing

Have you noticed that there is suddenly liquid appearing around your car when stationary? If so, you probably have an oil leak; this can cause serious problems so you should have it checked out immediately. This could be coming from your oil tank, but not a lot of people know that it can also be a symptom of suspension issues too. If you take a look at the underside of your car and your shock absorbers seem to be covered in liquid, they could be leaking breaker fluid which means that your car can break down at any moment. Less fluid means less stability for your car, resulting in dangerous situations, especially if you are driving on a busy motorway.

Weaker-Than-Usual Tyres

Have you noticed that your tyres look a little more bald than normal? If so, you could have an issue with your suspension; if your car takes beatings from potholes, or it has snowed or rained excessively, the friction that your tyres hold will reduce significantly. This can also happen when it snows and grit is used on the roads. With a worn-out suspension, your stopping distance can be affected by up to almost 20%.

You definitely should keep a keen eye out for any ‘sagging’ on different sides of your car and if one of your tyres looks like it is tilting or is unaligned with the rest, you could have quite a serious problem with your suspension.
